Additional explanation about paint drier:
Cobalt:
Cobalt is a most active oxidation catalyst, who makes the coating surface fast drying. Used alone, it may have a tendency to cause surface wrinkling, therefore, cobalt is generally used in combination with other metals, such as manganese zirconium, lead, zinc, calcium, rare earth.
Because the deep blue color of the cobalt counteracts the yellow of the oils and resins, cobalt is almost always used in white coatings.
Advised addition level 0.02-0.06%(non-volatilization weight of metal to resin)
Lead:
Lead is a polymerization catalyst which acts throughout the film. It can improve adhesion and anticorrosion of coating film. It is usually used in combination wit cobalt and manganese.
Advised addition level: 0.5-1%
Manganese:
Manganese is moderate active oxidizing and polymerizing catalyst. Who has good "through drying" properties, when used in combination with cobalt, lead. Tough films are produced. Usually they are employed for enamels, outside paint, floor finishes and baking finishes.
Advised addition level: 0.005-0.02%
Rare earth:
Rare earth direr is consists of lanthanum, neodymium cerium. They are complex besides they have the changing vagrancy properties of common drier, efficiently promoting resin throughout drying. The rate of fast, tough is better than that of traditional drier. So they can substitute lead, manganese, zinc, calcium.
Advised addition level: 0.2-0.5% Iron:
Iron becomes very active at high temperatures, while it exhibits very little drying at room temperature, so it mainly used in baking paint. It provides tough, durable, flexible films with good gloss.
Iron also is a wetting agent and helps to obtain quicker and better grinds when used with carbon black pigment.
Because of its dark color and high staining power , Iron is usually used in dark-colored baking enamels.
Zirconium:
Zirconium is a complex polymerizing catalyst, who acts as a synthesis with other drier to improve overall through drying. Often used in combination with cobalt, Manganese or calcium in lead free paint. Three pounds of zirconium can replace four pounds of lead (based on metal) and zirconium can provide the coating film good tough and gloss.
Advised addition level: 0.03-0.2%
Zinc:
Zinc is a auxiliary drier. It keeps the film open to allow hardening through the film. It is also a powerful wetting and dispersing agent. When incorporated before milling. It greatly reduces the time of mixing and grinding.
Advised addition level: 0.03-0.2%
Calcium:
Calcium is known as an auxiliary drier, usually used in combination with cobalt. It can modify the balance of top dry and through dry, reducing wrinkling. It avoids the loss of drying because the complex compound of calcium and cobalt prevent the cobalt from being absorbed by the pigment. It is possible to replace parts of the lead with a large amount of calcium to prevent the precipitation of the lead and maintain drying efficiency. Calcium is also useful as pigment wetting and dispersing agents and help to improve hardness and gloss and reduce skinning and crater.
Advised addition level: 0.05-0.20%
